W czerwcu 2003 roku na Kongresie SLD została wpisana do statutu partii jedna młodzieżówka pod nazwą: Federacja Młodych Socjaldemokratów. Duża w tym zasługa Sekretarza Generalnego SLD, Marka Dyducha. Wcześniej działała Frakcja Młodych SdRP (silna, licząca się wewnątrz partii), a od roku 1999, czyli od momentu powstania SLD, lewicowy ruch młodzieżowy był różnorodny i wewnętrznie podzielony. Zamiast jednoczyć siły na rzecz walki o wspólne ideały, młodzieżówki rywalizowały ze sobą, a starsi koledzy z partii wykorzystywali młodych do własnych rozgrywek i rozlepiania plakatów.
Przy SLD działało kilka organizacji. Najbardziej znane to Stowarzyszenie Młodej Lewicy Demokratycznej (SMLD), Sojusz Młodej Lewicy (SML) oraz Związek Socjalistycznej Młodzieży Polskiej (ZSMP). Proces zjednoczenia przebiegał w III etapach. Rozpoczynał się oddolnie - od zjazdów powiatowych (Warszawa
22 XI 2003r.), poprzez wojewódzkie (Mazowsze 6 XII 2003r.), po kongres krajowy (10-11 stycznia 2004r.). Zjazdy wybierały władze oraz uchwalały program. Koło warszawskie rozpoczęło działalność ze stanem osobowym: 360 członków, zaś Mazowsze - ponad 1000 członków.
Federacja Młodych Socjaldemokratów podjęła współpracę z SLD, ale w swej istocie ma być organizacją niezależną, zgadzającą się z generalnymi celami partii, często jednak widzącą inne sposoby ich realizacji. Chcemy i będziemy partnerami, a nie wasalami. Władze nowej organizacji mają doprowadzić w ciągu

About us In June 2003 at the SLD Congress (Democratic Left Alliance) one youth association, the Federation of Young Social Democrats (FMS), was included in the SLD party charter. This should be credited to SLD General Secretary Marek Dyduch. Previously there was the Youngs Wing of SdRP (an important structure within Social Democracy of the Republic of Poland) and since 1999, when SLD was established, left-wing youth movement was diverse and internally divided. Instead of uniting forces for the sake of common ideas youth groups were competing with one another. Older colleagues from the party were engaging the young in their own plays and made them hanging political posters in public places. SLD was supported by a few organisations existing at the time, the Association of Young Democratic Left (SMLD), the Alliance of Young Left (SML) and the Union of Polish Socialist Youth (ZSMP) baing the best known of them. The uniting process was performed in three stages. It began within basic structures – from county meetings (Warsaw, 22nd November 2003), then by voivodship meetings (Mazovia, 6th December 2003) to the Country Congress (10-11th January 2004). During the meetings authorities were elected and their political program was passed. The Warsaw circle began its activity with 360 members while in Mazovia there were over 1000 members at the beginning. The Federation of Young Social Democrats has been cooperating with SLD while it remains an independent organisation, giving the go-ahead to the party`s general objectives and at the same time seeing other ways of fulfilling them. We are willing to be constant partners and hence we should not be treated as subordinates. The authorities of the new organisation are supposed to effectively unite the left youth and give it a new functional quality within the first year of its activity. Will FMS make it happen? The future seems bright but it remains to be seen whether FMS will fulfill this task.
